Meteor Crater and Lowell Observatory will co-host a one-day public event centered around asteroids and their impact on Earth. Asteroid Day Flagstaff will take place on Sunday, June 30th, with scientific programs, tours of both facilities, food trucks, local beer, games & prizes, science demonstrations, and night-sky telescope viewing.

Meteor Crater will host a full rim tour at 9 a.m. followed by daytime festivities from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m PDT, and Lowell Observatory will host evening events from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. PDT. Programs will address aspects of asteroids—what they are, how scientists look for them, and the nature of impacts on Earth.

Headlining this year’s event are evening science presentations at Lowell Observatory. Dr. Nick Moskovitz will discuss a project that utilizes off-the-shelf security cameras to image meteors and allow scientists to predict the location of potential meteorite impacts. Brian Skiff will also share the intriguing story of Zoozve—an asteroid that appears to orbit Venus as a quasi-moon—which captured the imagination of the public last year.
