When it formed around 2.02 billion years ago, the original crater is estimated to have measured between 160 and 300 kilometers (100 to 190 miles) across, the result of an asteroid thought to be 10 to 15 kilometers wide slamming into the early Earth. That makes it both one of the largest and one of the oldest impact sites ever confirmed.

Two billion years of erosion and tectonic activity have worn the crater away almost completely. What remains is the Vredefort Dome, a ring of hills marking the central uplift that rebounded after the impact, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The town of Vredefort sits near its center, and several communities now occupy land that was once ground zero for one of the most violent events in Earth’s history.

Why “Largest” Is Complicated

Measuring ancient craters is tricky. Scientists distinguish between the original crater, which may have spanned hundreds of kilometers, and the impact structure that survives today after erosion strips away the rim and tectonic forces deform what’s left. For very old craters like Vredefort, only the deep roots of the structure remain, so size estimates are careful reconstructions rather than direct measurements.

This is also why Earth has so few visible giant craters compared to the Moon or Mars. Our planet is geologically alive. Wind, water, plate tectonics, and volcanism constantly recycle the surface, erasing impact scars over millions of years. The Moon, with no atmosphere or active geology, preserves craters billions of years old in crisp detail, while Earth quietly buries or destroys its own.

There are also tantalizing candidates that could be even bigger, if they turn out to be real. The proposed Wilkes Land crater beneath the ice of Antarctica may span as much as 500 kilometers, which would dwarf Vredefort, but it has never been confirmed as an impact structure. Until scientists gather definitive evidence, Vredefort keeps the official title of the largest verified crater on Earth.

Other Giant Impact Craters

Vredefort may be the biggest, but it has company among the planetary heavyweights:

  • Chicxulub (Mexico). About 180 kilometers (110 miles) wide and 66 million years old, Chicxulub is the famous crater linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Buried beneath the Yucatán Peninsula, it is the largest mostly intact impact crater on Earth, even though you cannot see it at the surface.
  • Sudbury Basin (Canada). Roughly 130 kilometers across and 1.85 billion years old, this Ontario crater has been deformed into an oval over time. The impact concentrated rich nickel and copper deposits, making it one of the most valuable mining regions in the world.
  • Manicouagan and Popigai. Each around 100 kilometers wide, these craters in Canada and Russia are striking from above. Manicouagan’s ring-shaped reservoir, the “Eye of Quebec,” is easily visible from space.

What About Volcanic Craters?

It’s worth noting that not every “crater” is an impact crater. Volcanic craters and calderas form when a volcano erupts and collapses, not when something strikes from space. Some of these are enormous in their own right, such as the Yellowstone Caldera or Indonesia’s Toba. When people ask about the largest crater on Earth, though, they almost always mean impact craters, which is where Vredefort reigns.
