Meteor vs. Meteorite vs. Asteroid vs Comet: The Quick Answer

The same chunk of space rock can earn several different names depending on where it happens to be. Out in space, a small fragment is a meteoroid and a large body is an asteroid. The bright streak of light it makes while burning through Earth’s atmosphere is a meteor, also known as a shooting star. And if any piece survives the fiery fall and lands on the ground, that piece is a meteorite. Comets are a separate category entirely, made mostly of ice. In short: location and size change the name.

Asteroid: The Big One in Space

An asteroid is a large rocky or metallic object that orbits the Sun. Most live in the asteroid belt, a vast ring of debris between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, left over from the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Asteroids range enormously in size, from a few meters across to hundreds of kilometers. The largest, Ceres, is nearly 600 miles wide and is classified as a dwarf planet. Some asteroids, called near-Earth objects, travel on paths that bring them close to our planet.
Meteoroid: The Small Stuff

A meteoroid is essentially a small asteroid, or a fragment broken off from one. This is the word most people forget. Scientists generally use “meteoroid” for objects ranging from dust-grain size up to about a meter across, though the exact cutoff between a large meteoroid and a small asteroid is a bit fuzzy. Many meteoroids are chips knocked off asteroids in collisions, while others are crumbs of dust and rock shed by comets. As long as the object is still drifting through space, it stays a meteoroid.
Meteor: The Shooting Star

Here’s the key point that trips people up: a meteor is not an object at all. It’s an event. When a meteoroid slams into Earth’s atmosphere at tens of thousands of miles per hour, it compresses and heats the air in front of it so violently that the object glows and vaporizes, creating the brilliant streak of light we call a meteor or shooting star. An especially bright meteor is known as a fireball. When Earth passes through a trail of debris left by a comet or asteroid, we see many meteors at once, which is exactly what produces the annual meteor showers visible across Arizona.
Meteorite: The One You Can Hold

Most meteoroids burn up completely before they ever reach the ground. But sometimes a fragment is large enough to survive the plunge and land on the surface. That surviving piece is a meteorite. Meteorites are rare and scientifically priceless, offering us samples of the early solar system we could otherwise never reach. They generally fall into three families: stony meteorites made mostly of rock, iron meteorites made of iron and nickel, and stony-iron meteorites that blend both. Holding one means holding a genuine piece of outer space.
What About Comets?
Comets are the icy cousins of asteroids. Instead of rock and metal, they are made largely of ice, dust, and frozen gases, often described as “dirty snowballs.” They originate in the cold outer reaches of the solar system, and when a comet’s orbit carries it close to the Sun, that ice begins to vaporize, forming the glowing cloud and long, sweeping tail comets are famous for. As comets shed material along their path, they leave behind the debris streams that later light up our skies as meteor showers.
